I've read many articles that pertain to the wedding industry over the years, and most have to do with money and how to save. Why not, that seems to get most peoples attention. Yet the advice is often written by people that have no idea at what goes on behind the scenes or by people that are paid to attract headlines. No, meaningful information is ascertained.

Here I will focus on an individuals perspective on your wedding and what you should accomplish. The first thing you should decide is what's important to you. Some people love flowers and make that a focus of attention. They have an outdoor wedding in the spring or summer loaded with fresh orchids, callililies or such. My point is everyone is different. Some people book their photographer or entertainment before they even know where the reception hall will be. Splurge on the things that are most important to you but try to keep the other vendors in mind, and try to leave enough for a quality vendor.

When trying to save money just remember accessories, are often the most hidden costs associated with all wedding budget blowouts. For instance, chair covers, wedding favors, tent lighting, and all the little things that only you will probably ever remember can add up quickly. Some of these things might be extremely important to you, again everyone is different, the best thing is to make a list, and start with what's the most important.

Here's a typical standard list, that most people find in order of importance. Of course yours will be different.

1) Reception Site
2) Wedding Dress
3) Photographer
4) DJs / Band
5) Flowers
6) Wedding Cake
7) Makeup/Beauty
8) Videographer
9) Limousines
10) Videographers

Once your list is created try to budget for each one accordingly. When looking at each vendor, try to find referrals for each through friends and family. Then call a few that perhaps you've found through other sources, possibly from a web site. Try to meet or narrow it down to 3 of each vendor. At least this will give you a median idea of what to expect for your budget. Again, splurge on what's important and tighten the belt on what's not.

I often hear young couples trying to save money by using a friend or someone just starting out. Sometimes it works out but I've also seen instances where it doesn't. Sometimes in the loss of a friendship or through another life's learning lesson. Someone just starting out doesn't, have a good track record. That means that its possible that they might not be around in a years from now. Some vendors, especially with your photographer, you will need years after your wedding. You may need them to make prints or albums for you later. Some fly by night operations might sound cheap at first glance but don't stand the test of time. These are chances some people unfortunately take but don't think much about while planning their wedding.
